The devastating shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs' Super Bowl celebration sent shockwaves through our community. It hit particularly close to home with the loss of Bishop Miege High School alum, Lisa Lopez-Galvan, and the injuries sustained by students attending St. Agnes Catholic School in Roeland Park.
"You have tragic situations like this one that occur way too often," shared Beto Lopez, Lisa's brother, in an interview after her death. "Individuals get lost as statistics. My sister was a real person. She was a loving, caring and devoted mother and community leader."
Lisa's decades of contributions served as an unbreakable bond, sparking an outpouring of love and compassion from throughout our caring Catholic community as news of her death spread.
Local parishes, Catholic schools and organizations came together to offer prayers, condolences and assistance to the affected families. Vigils were held, both in person and virtually, to honor the memory of Lisa Lopez-Galvan and comfort the other victims and their families.
More than $350,000 has been donated through the GoFundMe fundraiser established to support Lisa's family.
Through these challenging times, our Catholic community remained steadfast in its commitment to supporting one another and upholding the values of compassion, forgiveness and solidarity. As we continue to pray for Lisa's family, we draw strength from our shared faith and the bonds that connect us as a community, even in the darkest of moments.
