Now more than ever, Catholic schools recognize the importance of fostering a nurturing environment that supports student mental health. Here are five ways CEF schools are taking proactive steps to ensure students' emotional well-being is prioritized alongside their academic development.

1. Integrated Counseling Services | Many schools in the Archdiocese have integrated counseling services, providing students with easy access to compassionate counselors and a dedicated space to share concerns and struggles in a positive and empathetic environment.

2. Mental Health Education for Teachers |  Awareness and education are key to reducing stigma and fostering understanding. Recognizing this need, the Archdiocese implemented a mental health training program for teachers. The Catholic Social Emotional Learning curriculum provides teachers with resources and guidance to help them support the well-being of their students and others in their school community.

3. Spiritual Guidance |  Teachers, administrators, priests and chaplains work together to create caring, spiritual environments where students can pray together, seek advice and explore their Catholic faith. These efforts help students develop a strong sense of self, spirituality and purpose, key components for their mental health. In fact, data from a 2021 study on religion and mental health found that religious practice relates to a better ability to cope with stress and lowers the risk of depression, anxiety and suicide.

4. Peer Relationships |  Catholic schools provide students with a safe, faith-filled learning environment where they feel accepted and can build positive relationships with peers. Programs like faith families and buddy systems, help students foster connections and a sense of belonging, ultimately contributing to their mental well-being.

5. Volunteer Opportunities |  Service is an important element of Catholic education. Each year, students at our Catholic schools spend time volunteering, experiencing first-hand the importance of compassion, generosity, gratitude and kindness. And psychologists have found that when we help others, our brain releases serotonin, dopamine and endorphins, which improves mental health.

Committed to nurturing the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—Catholic schools have been pioneers in prioritizing mental health and ensuring the well-being of their students.
